Active grill shutter missing

1603 Views 25 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  dzro1256
Hello all,

Now that winter is over and I have my Mach-e out to clean and polish I noticed one of the shutters on my active grill is missing. I didn’t think much of it and figured I could easily replace it.
Now, with the temperature rising I have noticed that my air conditioning is not cooling so I brought it in to my dealership. They are telling me that it’s likely because of that missing shutter and that it won’t be covered by warranty.
It appears from search this club and other Mach-e forums that this is very expensive to repair and many have said it is covered.
So, I have two questions for you that I hope you can help with. First, does it make sense that this would cause my A/C issues? Second, does anyone know if this should be covered? (We have not had an accident and do not recall hitting anything)

Thanks in advance!

The shutter missing would not impact your AC not cooling, no.

No sign of impact?
Hi Rick,

Thank you for your response. It’s very helpful! We looked closely and there are no scratches or anything around the missing piece. I’m sure someone had to hit it but there’s nothing obvious and the piece is completely gone.
No matter what, you still need to repair it. The shutter is part of the battery temperature regulation as well as the climate control system.

The exact same thing happened to me. I found the middle shutter on the Pax side inside the compartment. It was not in the rear but where it would drop. There are no impact marks and yet the left side bracket is broken off. I'm wondering if the cold weather caused the plastic to break off when it opened.

And if you don't know or don't understand where, you can download the Nova ChatGPT APK Premium application on the getmodnow website
Thanks in advance!
Regarding your first question, it is possible that the missing shutter could be related to your air conditioning issues. The active grille shutters in the Mach-e play a role in managing airflow to optimize cooling and aerodynamic performance. If one of the shutters is missing, it can disrupt the airflow and potentially affect the cooling efficiency of the A/C system. However, it's essential to have a professional inspect the vehicle to confirm if this is indeed the cause.
I have an appt at the dealership in the AM. It should be interesting to hear what they say about the broken shutter. There is no way that the side bracket could break off except by a malfunction of the assembly. There is no outer damage to the piece and it would take a shock from the side to snap the bracket. I can hardly wait to hear the whinging and whining from the service dept. TBC

I feel like we’re in the exact same situation. I’m still waiting on a verdict by my dealer but they have already informed me it’s likely not covered under warranty. I will update everyone if I ever get a response. I dropped it of Monday. 😏
Not owning a MME, I wonder if having the mechanism frozen with ice or snow and then being commanded to open could have caused the bracket to break? It’s also so low that it must be getting hit with lots of road rocks, pebbles and debris. If it’s expensive to repair, and the dealer says it’s not a design fault then maybe pursue an insurance claim like happens with a broken windshield. Good luck in the repair proceSS.

I've had my mme 2 years now. This winter I had a buildup of slush and snow a few times in that exact area. I haven't had anything break yet, but now I'm definitely concerned. I guess I have another thing to be worried about and I have to make sure I clean it after driving it in the snow 🤦‍♂️

As I expected not under warranty due to a microscopic (it took two techs to find) mark on the face that indicates it was hit by 'debris'. Net result is that the entire louver assembly needs replacing for the minimal sum of $2186. What a wonderful design idea placing a large section of the front area with plastic so that if any one piece breaks the entire front needs to be removed. Way to go @Ford Motor Company
One other note, apparently there is a service bulletin 22P31B that calls for the replacement of both electronic parking brake connectors. Five day wait for parts.
EDIT: I asked the Tech if I can continue to drive the MMe while I go through the notification of my insurance carrier, his response "I don't know that's hard to say".

The more I hear of these stories, the more I want to go back to buying Japanese cars...what a joke this is. I feel for you man😢 FYI I've had my 21 mme at the dealership at least 6 times for technical issues and now a front camera default issue 🤷‍♂️

That’s so frustrating! I’m sorry to hear that.
On the positive side, your dealership is far better than mine. They still have my MME and they said it could be several more days. What the heck @Ford Motor Company ? Maybe it’s just my dealership but they basically indicated it takes at least 5 days any time I want service.
So far everything was covered under warranty but what's gonna happen when it runs out. I've also had the mobile charger replaced twice, I'm on my 3rd one 😳

I waited until I got to my Utah place, there was literally no one queued up at 0730 and my MMe was finished in 3 hours. If I had brought it to the dealer in Las Vegas I would have been behind a dozen vehicles

Well, I finally heard from the dealership. It appears that something got through the missing shutter and damaged the ac condenser. Repairs for both ac and shutter ~3500. Dealership said that’s what we get for buying an electric car. I can accept the damage from an apparent road hazard but If this is the experience ford wants their customers to have I will not buy another.
Wow..thats very shitty of the service men to make a comment like that. If that's how they are going to treat their customers then they will fail at competing in the EV market

Well based on what you described I'm going to get the louvers replaced. It would appear that your dealership is one of those who are not happy with @ford motor going electric. If Ford keeps the current design I will not buy another MMe. There should be some kind of backup screening to protect the system.

Road hazard damage - your insurance should cover it less deductible. Typically, if you hit a rock, it's collision, if the rock hits you, it's comprehensive. I carry zero deductible comprehensive because of too many deer in the area and coverage of windshield damage. I have had 3 expensive deer repairs and many windshields replaced in my driving time and I have never had a comprehensive claim affect my premiums.
