OTA (over-the-air) updates are available in the 2021+ Mach-E and part of Ford's move to offer seamless tech. :)

"Making its debut in the Mach-E is the next-generation SYNC® communications and entertainment system, a sleek and modern interface that uses machine learning to quickly learn drivers’ preferences, and gets even better over time thanks to advanced over-the-air updates. Next-generation SYNC’s 15.5-inch screen and simple interface ditches complicated menus, making it easier to access features with touch, swipe and pinch controls that every smartphone owner will be comfortable using.

“Next-generation SYNC actively starts adapting to you as soon as you start using it, quickly learning your preferences and making personalized suggestions,” said Darren Palmer, Ford global director for battery electric vehicles. “It can suggest going to the gym if it learns Mondays are workout days or calling home if you do that every day after work. The result is a cloud-connected assistant and interface that’s intuitive, beautiful and ready for the future thanks to fast over-the-air updates.”

As next-generation SYNC evolves to serve customers better over time, Ford has outfitted the Mach-E with the ability to continuously improve through the delivery of secure over-the-air updates that are capable of enhancing vehicle performance, offering maintenance updates and even adding entirely new features."

Ford shared some new information about the Mach-E's over the air updates.

  • Ford says updates will be able to "download in the background" and some will be completed in under 2 minutes
  • In-vehicle alerts will tell them what improvements have been installed
  • The first updates will happen within six months after the first Mustang Mach-E vehicles are delivered
  • Updates can be applied using either Wi-Fi or cellular connections, depending on the update.

DEARBORN, Mich., May 12, 2020 – Owners of the all-new all-electric Mustang Mach-E won’t need to worry about keeping up with the Joneses, thanks to over-the-air updates that work to continuously improve the SUV over the vehicle’s life without leaving home.

And unlike some vehicles that require owners to wait while a software update takes place, Ford has developed a way to allow secure updates to download in the background, and in some cases, be completed in under two minutes1.

“The beauty of the Mustang Mach-E is that what our customers experience on day one is just the beginning – it will evolve to add even more features and capabilities over time,” said John Vangelov, connected services manager, Ford Motor Company. “Our clever over-the-air updates also minimize downtime through incredibly fast activation and ensure your Mustang Mach-E is always getting better, even when you’re asleep.”

These improvements go well beyond SYNC® updates. Nearly all Mustang Mach-E computer modules can be updated wirelessly, meaning Ford can provide performance enhancements and entirely new features that might not exist when customers first take delivery of their vehicles.

Some installations will be virtually invisible to customers, who can select a regular time – such as the middle of the night – for updates while their Mustang Mach-E is parked. Many updates will be completed almost instantly after a customer starts their vehicle, while in-vehicle alerts will tell them what improvements have been installed. Many can be completed in under two minutes, and more complex updates that might require the vehicle to be parked for longer can be scheduled to take place when customers find it most convenient.

Ford expects to deliver its first updates within six months after the first Mustang Mach-E vehicles are in the hands of customers. Owners will receive notifications detailing software updates when they are available, which can then be applied using either Wi-Fi or cellular connections, depending on the update.

Mustang Mach-E is just the start when it comes to this technology. In 2020, Ford will begin equipping most redesigned vehicles in the U.S. with advanced over-the-air update capability for quick and easy wireless upgrades that can help enhance quality, capability and improve the ownership experience over time while reducing dealer trips.

Ford delivering for its customers even during a pandemic

To ensure Mustang Mach-E launches with this advanced capability as planned, Ford’s engineering team has found new ways to develop and test over-the-air updates in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Previously, teams would have to get together in the same physical space to access all the different vehicle modules needed to test over-the-air capabilities – but work-from-home requirements mean engineers needed to think fast to change the way they operate.

The team moved swiftly to set up remote access to all of the vehicle modules, even wiring them with tools enabling engineers to quickly reprogram modules from their homes. What initially took five hours to program remotely can now be done in under 10 minutes.

“By quickly implementing remote access to our vehicle components, we’re ensuring our Mustang Mach-E customers can enjoy the great capabilities they’ve been looking forward to from the start, while providing the accommodations our engineers need to continue innovating from the safety of their homes,” said Vangelov.

1 Updates can be activated in under two minutes, while any updates that may require the vehicle to be parked can be scheduled to take place when customers find it most convenient.

OTA software updates are now part of the early access program

"Taking advice a step further, the company has willingly introduced an Early Access Program to better gauge user feedback and suggestions. Initially, the program was stricken to just 740 Ford employees but the company is now looking to expand that number.

Invites are expected to go out beginning April 26th with no confirmation on whether the Early Access Program will remain exclusive to Ford employees or be available to some public owners. The program is currently limited to a small random few but Ford notes the possibility of expanding it even further in the future."

"Interestingly this new batch of invites seems to focus on testing unreleased features. What those features entail is anyone’s guess."

I am an EA Program participant and also one of the many who are stuck at OTA update 1.6 as the car cannot update to 1.7.1. It is stuck and has been like that for several months. Ford has worked on a "fix" without success so far. Those affected keep waiting for a "fix" month after month. Ford says very little to us and we all keep waiting. The latest is that Ford is testing a NEW fix because the one they were working on messed up certain Mach E's. This fix is supposed to be ready late March 2022. We are all getting tired of this game and watch as others are on Startup update 2.5. It seems like the goal post keeps getting moved further and further down the field for us. I don't think this problem is serious enough for a buy back from Ford but we should all be compensated for the aggravation this has caused those who live with this. The car runs great otherwise.

From Ford EA Program a few days ago (2-28-2022):
"So sorry that we have not been able to address this issue sooner. We are testing a new solution now with our Ford Management Lease vehicles as we do with all updates prior to updating our Ford Early Access Program vehicles. Once we validate that fix resolves the issue and does not cause any others, we will release the fix to our Early Access Program participants. We are targeting to release to our Early Access Program participants by the end of March, and if possible, sooner. As soon as the fix is available, you will be notified right away and prioritized as one of the first to receive this. We will also ensure we get your vehicle updated to the latest software version available.

We truly appreciate your patience and willingness to participate as one of our Ford Early Access Program Members. It is because of customers like you that we were able to get this issue identified sooner and work towards a fix. We realize it has taken too long and that, we will also address."

And the wait continues . . . .
