Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power

Hello, yesterday I received this warning "Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power" via my Fordpass app for my 2021 Mustang Mach E. When I expand the "What should I do" message it says, "A Powertrain or All Wheel Drive (AWD)/Four Wheel Drive (4WD) fault has been detected, contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible." I called every Ford dealer near me, and they all say there are weeks long waits to get my car looked at. So my questions are:

  • Is there any authorized Ford repair shops besides the dealerships I can take my car to get looked at, and how do I find them?
  • As of right now the car still seems drive-able. Should I avoid driving in my car until this is addressed?

As a side-note, this did seem to coincide with it just getting updated with the power-up 4.1.1 update on the same day.

It is going to be dealer only will a Ford certified EV tech. Can you plug in a car scanner to the OBDII port and get the codes?
Just got the same message this morning. Car also drivable on way to work, and so hoping for good luck at dealer later today. Have to check if I had a software update overnight.

Hello, Amy! Send us a private message with your VIN and the name and location of your local Ford dealer.
I’d be happy to see what I can do to assist with this concern. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, but i don't have a car scanner to try this.

The dealer will replace a $2600 part that is under warranty. If you continue to drive your MachE it will stop and you will need to be towed to the dealer.
I received the same message in December. Took my 2021 GT to my local dealership, then the fun started.....
The seemingly straightforward software upgrade degenerated into a 6wk national search for a replacement chip, after the tech was unable to reboot. It really highlighted the supply chain issues that Ford (and others) are experiencing over these last couple of years. Happily, the dealership management reimbursed a couple of payments (after very poor customer service), but corporate were uninterested. All ok, presently.....

We have the same issue, can't private message you - maybe you can send a note to us? -Thomas
Sorry to wake up an old post. Our Mach E California had the same happen last night. Got a charge fault while charging. Went to drive it this morning to find the Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power alert. Dealership says they can’t get to it for 2-3 weeks.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.
Hi all,
We have had the same issue after the latest OTA update. Richard at Mullahey Ford in Arroyo Grande CA just called me and said that the update caused an error in the Synch system (that runs the center screen) and that caused the error message. He said there's nothing wrong with the car but it was the OTA that caused this glitch. Whew.

I asked him if an OBD2 reader would have detected this and he said no the MME had to be hooked up to their computer system.

When I get the MME back I'm going to turn off the automatic OTA updates so that this doesn't happen again. I'll then wait a while to see if others are having problems like this before installing the update.

@Ford Motor Company This is a major error and suggests to me that your software team did not fully bug check this update before releasing it. Now dealers may well be swamped with calls and visits unnecessarily.

Thanks, but message magically disappeared when restarted the car after work and I have not had another warning since then.

The warning message went away after restarting the car later that same day, and no messages since then.
2022 GT - same issues! Car spent the day at the dealer on Monday. Codes cleared back to normal driving and acceleration. Codes threw again on Friday of the same week. Reduced power and now I have to be inconvenienced by another trip to the dealership, hopefully a longer term correction. I find myself asking, “why did I buy a Ford? Should I have known better?” Extremely frustrating and confidence damaging.
