The issue with the Mach-Es is not software. The issue is hardware. It's a part called the HVBJB (high voltage battery junction box). It can get too hot during DC fast charging, or repeated wide open throttle events. CAN. 258 out of 50,000 in the US. The fix, for now, is this software update which will look for current and temp issues and prevent the failure by reducing power. The unknown is whether this will flag Ford that a specific car is close to failing and needs a new HVBJB, or whether they will eventually replace all of them.

Dealerships will have this software fix in July. Letters to customer will go out the week of July 18th. You MAY see the recall in FordPass sooner.

This is an interesting thought. Software that flags a car when conditions predict it will need a new HVBJB soon. That would be smart. Those cars could at least go to the front of the line for hardware replacement.

Last year I believe GM originally hoped that software updates could serve as the final fix for the batteries catching fire in the Bolt EVs. The software also detected when conditions predicted a runaway event was about to occur and started sounding the horn as an alarm. That part was smart.

It's all speculation at this point. The updates will reduce charging speed, or cut power to the motors, if needed. No one is going to be happy with that. The recall clearly states that the contactors are at fault, so it would seem that Ford might need to replace all of them at some point. We'll see.
