What is the purpose / function of the L button in the rotary gear selector?

From the manual:
Low (L)
You can activate this position at any
vehicle speed which provides an increased
level of deceleration when you lift off the
accelerator pedal. You can use low (L) at
all times, if desired, but improving
drivability while descending grades is the
intent. Entering low (L) does not take any
actions if one pedal drive is active.

Basically a more “aggressive” re-gen.

L has the same function in my current Fusion Energi (PHEV) when in EV-only mode.

I use it a lot - for example when I’m rolling towards a red light and want to increase the re-gen.

I guess it’s not too relevant for me in the MME as I’ll most likely be using 1-pedal drive when not in cruise.
