The IIHS posted on Instagram that they have a Mach-E at their facility ready to undergo crash and safety testing!

First up for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E are evaluations of headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and pedestrian front crash prevention. Crashworthiness evaluations kick off in a few weeks.

Shouldn't this have happened BEFORE people are buying them?

No: Tesla Model Y just got a 5 star rating (highest in all categories) and the model came out in March - almost 1 year ago.

Manufacturers crash test before selling to customers. They all try to get the best safety score possible.

The IIHS and NHTSA crash test from production units purchased anonymously through dealerships. Same with Consumer Reports and other entities.
All want to ensure that the car they are testing is of like build with those the consumers are getting.

The only test results that matter are from NHTSA and those are not done until after the car comes to market - not before.

Internal crash testing, like most test done internally, are highly suspect

My post is on the process, and to why the independent testers wait until vehicles are being sold to customers.

The manufacturers nowadays don’t just build something and put it on the road. They always test as close as possible to the real thing. No one wants to fail the test, its a PR nightmare.

I wasn’t implying to trust them at their word. And of course the independent tests are the important ones, thats just common sense.
