Windshield Recall 21C22

Just saw in Ford Authority that the windshield glass recall (21C22) was expanded to include Mustang Mach E's manufactured for the United States. It’s the same recall announced for Canada only it covers more cars (17,692). I am concerned about having my windshield removed and re-glued to my car because it has a light interior (Space Grey) and I’ve seen some pictures showing scuff marks and other damage to the interior of the cars after glass work (windshield repair).

This comes right after Ford announced the panoramic roof glass recall extending to the United States (which too includes more cars). In that recall the panoramic glass needs to be cleaned on the edges and adhesive added where needed.

Owners have to wait to receive letters from Ford letting them know of the recall before bringing their cars into the dealers. I assume that the dealers will outsource the work to third party companies like Safelite (at least I hope so as most dealerships are not equiped or have the skilled personnel required to perform glass repair).

And we all laughed when the Tesla roof came off on the drive home from the dealer!

Seriously, this is shades of the introduction of the Ford Explorer several years ago, where in the first 6 months there were several recalls.

Ford promised that would never happen again, that quality control on all new cars especially the MachE would be made better and that quality control would be priority #1.

This is way beyond "first year of production" growing pains. Ford has had windshields forever and panoramic roofs for many, many years.

I really feel the pain all of you must feel now. Very, very disappointing.

It is disappointing but not at all unexpected after the Canada recalls. I knew it was just a matter of time. I can't imagine the cost to Ford over this issue. Also, some have said their dealers kept their cars for weeks for windshield repair; this had better not happen here. I cannot afford to be without my car for weeks. If they do that I would expect a loaner on their dime. I don't know what our warranty states about this but I also have the Extended Warranty so hopefully between the two it would be taken care of.

Will Europe be next?

I think they already are, at least that's what I thought I read in the Ford Authority.

this really sucks. this article has a contact number in it for owners https://www.autobodynews.com/index....calls-ordered-for-glass-problems.html?start=1

and this is ford's recall website to check by vin. nothing on it yet.. but this sounds like a huge chunk of the us cars are affected, 17k us for windshield and 14k us for panoramic roof. https://www.ford.com/support/recalls/

the panoramic roof recall for the us is 21s42

Anybody on this forum have first hand experience with either piece of glass coming loose? I would like Ford to update their communications as soon as possible to include what to look for, what conditions might cause failure, etc. I have had previous recalls that at least gave hints about the kinds of things you could do to avoid problems until the fix.

It's hard to know just what conditions would be necessary, but I think just to be on the safe side it might be a good idea to leave a window or two slightly open (weather & location permitting) so that when you close your doors you don't create overpressure that might speed up the failure. Having said this, if this sort of thing speeds up the failure Ford has a big problem. I know in some vehicles the windshield is a stressed member of the body, but I don't know if this is true for the Mach-E?

I believe all windshields are part of the body integrity in roll overs and ditto for the roof.

These are not just "wind, noise and water issues" but safety issues.

Look Ford has been in the business of making cars for just a few years, so not being able to attach either a windshield or roof is to be expected!

Funny! Not really, Ford has another black eye and we’ve got another thing to worry about. I expected software glitches but not hardware or body integrity issues.

From the Ford Authority site: The hazards: in affected vehicles, the windshield can become loose and could separate from the vehicle in a crash, creating an increased risk of injury.

While this is not acceptable, it is less worrisome to me than “may spontaneously fly apart while driving 75mph on Turnpike”.

I agree 100%: One thing I never - ever even thought about was either the windshield or the roof flying off the car!

This is unforgivable and worse yet as the Ford made fun of the Model Y on the way home from the dealer where the roof flew of!

I am glad you find solace in that!

I for one cannot understand how a main line auto manufacturer can fail to properly attach both the windshields and glass roofs to the body of their cars.

Since this is the Mach e club web page I will still make fun of the Model Y! I love my MMe!

I don't like any recall, but from what little I know, this one doesn't sound terrible.

I get windshields replaced regularly, because I have to drive on gravel roads, and the private company that does it shows up at my door, removes the old one, installs the new one, and leaves in about an hour. They do a great job at a fair price, because they have specialized tools and a lot of experience. The biggest hassle is replacing any stickers that you had on the windshield.

Having said that, I am not sure that they know much about panoramic roofs, so if that part is in the 21C22 recall, it might be more problematic.

I agree 100%: I too have had windshields replaced at my home: usually done in under an hour.

But a panoramic roof is totally different: interesting that on this forum there have been complaints about wind noise, water leakage and space between the roof and rear body part. So it might be more than just redoing the adhesion. Hopefully for every MachE owner it is not, that with the proper adhesive the roof will fit 100%.

I just had my panoramic roof replaced after a road hazard… it was on back order for three months and took two trips to the dealer for replacement because they needed a “urethane” glass specialist to do it. I can only imagine how long it will take to get these all replaced.

Truly unbelievable: How can close to 20,000 cars go out without the correct bonding adhesion on both the windshield and the roof? I wonder if the rear window will need replacement as well?
Ford officials have said no windshields/roofs have fallen off, and that this is a preemptive measure.

My guess is they saw the adhesive wasn’t performing to spec as it investigated warranty claims (wind-noise, creaking, etc).
